Kento Momota makes surprise return, set for clash with Shi Yuqi at King’s Cup 2025
The official King Cup social media pages recently confirmed that Momota will reappear on the professional stage after an absence of over 18 months.
The 31-year-old revealed that his decision was heavily influenced by a personal invitation from his idol, Lin Dan. Momota stated that "it meant a lot" to be invited by someone he has admired for so long, regardless of his current world ranking.
Furthermore, he expressed a strong desire to return to the court to serve as a role model for the young players he now coaches. "If I can’t move on court myself, then as a coach, my words won’t be convincing," Momota explained.
Regarding his physical condition, Momota shared an encouraging update after recovering from a lower back injury that required surgery earlier this year. He noted that his back pain is no longer an issue and he feels in excellent condition.
Interestingly, Momota believes his movement is now "cleaner and faster" because his mind is clearer without the pressure of world rankings.
The tournament schedule has set the stage for a blockbuster opening round, as Momota is slated to face current world number one Shi Yuqi. The Chinese star has been dominant throughout 2025, recently securing the World Championship title and maintaining a massive lead in the BWF rankings.
Despite the challenge, Momota requested this specific matchup to measure himself against the current benchmark. "Now I have nothing to fear. I just want to challenge everything I have," he said.
During his professional peak, Momota was a dominant force, winning a record 11 titles in 2019 and holding 2 World Championship gold medals.
The King Cup, founded by Lin Dan in 2024, is an independent exhibition event known for its "royal" atmosphere and massive prize pool. The 2025 edition takes place from December 26 to 28, featuring 8 top-tier players including Anders Antonsen, Jonatan Christie, and Alex Lanier.
The champion will receive a staggering 1.2 million Yuan (approximately $165,000) and a custom-engraved "King" throne. Antonsen enters the event as the defending champion. For badminton fans, the King Cup provides a high-stakes spectacle to enjoy now that the standard 2025 BWF World Tour season has concluded.
