Indonesia Masters: Chen Yufei wins first title of 2026; Alwi Farhan stays king at home
In the women’s singles category, world number four Chen Yufei claimed her first trophy of the 2026 season. After successfully eliminating her long-time rival, P.V. Sindhu, in a high-stakes quarterfinal, Chen appeared to have no significant obstacles left on her path to the title.
However, the final brought a spirited challenge from Thailand's rising star, Pitchamon Opatniputh. The 19-year-old "badminton prodigy" surprised the top seed in the opening game with her relentless movement and powerful smashes. Opatniputh’s youthful energy and precise rallies allowed her to lead at several points, forcing Chen to dig deep.
As the first game progressed, the difference in experience became evident. When the initial shock of Opatniputh's aggression faded, the Thai youngster began to show signs of impatience, committing unforced errors under pressure.
Chen Yufei seized this opportunity with remarkable composure, narrowly winning the first set 23-21. Having overcome the mental hurdle, Chen dominated the second game. She played with renewed freedom, launching heavy smashes and quick returns that left her junior opponent struggling to keep up. The match ended 21-13 in the second set, marking a perfect start to the year for the Chinese star.
The men's singles final, however, left local fans somewhat surprised by its brevity as Alwi Farhan delivered an overwhelming performance. Facing Thailand's Panitchaphon Teeraratsakul, the 20-year-old Indonesian was in a "rampage" mode from the start. Farhan utilized sharp crosscourt shots and a high-intensity attacking style to leave Teeraratsakul breathless.
The scoreline told a story of total dominance. Farhan raced to an 11-4 lead in the first game and ended it 21-5 in just ten minutes. The second game followed a similar pattern, with Farhan leading 11-2 at the interval.
Despite a brief moment where Teeraratsakul won 3 consecutive points, Farhan quickly regained control to finish the match 21-6. This victory secured Farhan’s first Super 500 title and his first trophy of 2026, marking a significant milestone in his young career.
In the women's doubles, the championship was decided without a single serve. Malaysia's Pearly Tan and Thinaah Muralitharan were crowned winners after the Japanese pair, Arisa Igarashi and Miyu Takahashi, were forced to withdraw.
Reports indicated that Takahashi suffered from a fever following her grueling semifinal match, handing the Malaysian duo a walkover victory and their first title of the 2026 season.
