Indonesia Masters 2026: Sindhu and Chen Yufei set for quarter-final showdown
Former world number 1 P.V. Sindhu is showing strong signs of reclaiming her elite form after a long period of struggling with persistent injuries. Despite a disappointing exit at her home tournament, the India Open 2026, the 30-year-old veteran arrived in Jakarta with a fierce hunger for the championship.
Her journey at this year's Indonesia Masters began with a commanding opening-round victory over the rising Japanese talent, Manami Suizu. This win propelled her into a high-octane second-round encounter against Denmark’s Line Hojmark Kjaerfeldt.
The match against Kjaerfeldt was a tactical battle that kept the audience on the edge of their seats for 43 minutes. In the opening game, both players traded powerful smashes and delicate net shots, staying neck-and-neck until the very end.
Sindhu displayed superior composure during the pressure points, clinching the first game 21-19 with a cross-court winner. The second game followed a similar pattern, with the Danish player pushing Sindhu to move constantly across the court.
However, at 18-18, the Indian star unleashed a series of aggressive overhead attacks to secure three consecutive points, ending the match 21-18. Following this result, Sindhu has now extended her dominant head-to-head record against Kjaerfeldt to 5 wins in their 6 professional meetings.
On the other side of the bracket, world number Chen Yufei continued her destructive run of form. Following a dominant performance against Polina Buhrova in the previous round, the Chinese superstar delivered another masterclass against Denmark’s Julie Dawall Jakobsen.
The match lasted just over 30 minutes, highlighting a massive gap in skill and speed. The 27-year-old Chen utilized her trademark power, firing relentless smashes and maintaining near-perfect accuracy. With almost no unforced errors, Chen dismantled her opponent’s defense to finish the match with a lopsided score of 21-7 and 21-9.
This sets the stage for one of the most anticipated matchups of the tournament. Sindhu and Chen Yufei have faced each other 13 times in their careers, with Chen holding a slight 7-6 edge in their overall rivalry.
Interestingly, while Sindhu is a legendary figure in the sport, her last victory over Chen Yufei dates back to 2019 during her historic gold-medal run at the BWF World Championships.
