An Se-young wins BWF Women’s Player of the Year for the third consecutive time

After a highly successful year with 11 titles, the number 1 women’s singles player An Se-young was unsurprisingly named “Women’s Player of the Year 2025” by the Badminton World Federation (BWF), equaling a 14-year-old record previously held by two legendary male players, Lee Chong-wei and Lin Dan.

According to Korea Times, at the BWF’s annual awards ceremony held in Hangzhou, China, An Se-young once again received the “Women’s Player of the Year” award. This marked her third consecutive win, following her previous victories in 2023 and 2024.

This year’s award holds special significance for An Se-young, as it saw her make history in world badminton by becoming the first female player to win this award 3 times in a row. At the same time, the South Korean star matched the achievement of icons Lin Dan and Lee Chong-wei, whose record had stood unbroken for 14 years.

This year highlighted the dominance and strength of An Se-young across all competitions she entered. The player claimed titles at Super 1000 tournaments, including the Malaysia Open, All England Open, and Indonesia Open. She also won a Super 750 event and secured top finishes at the India Open, Japan Open, China Masters, Denmark Open, and France Open. In addition, An Se-young showed clear superiority at the Super 500 Australian Open and the Super 300 Orleans Masters.

Notably, An Se-young reached 11 BWF finals in 2025 and won every one of them, equaling the same achievement set by Kento Momota in 2019. She also broke her own record for the highest number of international titles in a single season, which she had previously set in 2023 with 9 titles.

She has broken many records.

Overall, after a total of 77 matches in 2025, the South Korean player recorded 73 wins and only 4 losses. She achieved a win rate of 94.8%, the highest ever recorded among players who competed in more than 60 matches in a single year. This performance further strengthened her position as world number one, with a total of 113,770 ranking points.

However, An Se-young’s 2025 campaign was not completely perfect, as she missed out on the World Championship title after being eliminated in the semifinals.
